Back when I first started learning about diet and nutrition, I heard a lot about "good carbs" and "bad" carbs. Good, Bad meant a set of simple. The difference lies mainly in the way they are. Fast good carbohydrates (such as vegetables)-Digest slowly Digest Bad carbohydrates (such as sugar).
In the war between good and bad carbs something I came across it again and again, lists which carbohydrates were good and bad. When a low carb diet was even more popular than it is today, everyone and their grandmother wrote his own list of good carb/Bad carb.
For the most part these lists are well and good. People learned that Brown rice is better than white rice. Sweet potatoes, better than white potatoes. And whole wheat bread is better than white bread.
Please wait... keep it there.
Upon learning that whole wheat bread was better bread, I was the first in line at my grocery store the next day, pick up some whole wheat bread. No more bad bread for me. So I walked down bread bread aisle … more white bread, white bread, wait, here we go ... whole wheat bread!
I bought it. I ate it. I bought more. I ate more. Every single piece of bread, I ate from that point on was just wheat. I feel good knowing I eat better food.
Cut a little later. Whole wheat bread was not in the list of "good" carb anymore. Look what it has now been replaced by "100% whole wheat bread. Oh no, it seems as though I was reading lists have not been specific enough. Apparently whole wheat bread, I am currently eating perhaps not 100%. Who knew there was something less than 100%?
So I went back to the repository. White bread, white bread, whole wheat bread, Ah, here we go ... 100% whole wheat bread. Now I've got the right one. Screw you white bread and screw you too common whole wheat bread, you both were replaced by the better-nourished 100% whole wheat bread.
Cut a little later. This was when I found out that the point of this post. In the same way as "good" and "bad" carbs, as there are "good" and "bad" whole-wheat bread … and "100%" has nothing to do with it.
In order to understand the differences, the first thing you need to do is ignore this part of the "100%". Just ignore it completely. This means nothing to you. Think of it more as a marketing slogan rather than power. You know what, just ignore all of the front side of the package of bread at all. There is nothing useful there anyway.
What you need to do this, in turn, all your attention to the back. In particular ingredients. This is where you will find if you actually chose "good" whole wheat bread.
To show the difference between "good" and "bad", here is a list of ingredients on batch Arnold 100% whole wheat bread:
"Whole Wheat flour, water, gluten, high fructose corn syrup, cracked wheat, yeast, salt, partially Hydrogenated soybean oilconcentrated juice, molasses, raisins, ethoxylated Mono-and diglycerides, Calcium propionate (preservative), honey, soy lecithin.
Here is a list of ingredients on the back of the package a different Arnold bread brand, this time under the name Arnold natural 100% whole wheat bread:
"Unbleached enriched wheat flour [flour, malted barley flour, niacin, reduced iron, THIAMINE MONONITRATE (vitamin B1), folic acid, riboflavin (vitamin B2)], water, cracked wheat, whole wheat flour, barley, yeast, honey, fructose, wheat gluten, partially Hydrogenated soybean oil, salt, malt, wheat bran, ethoxylated Mono-and diglycerideshigh fructose corn syrup, Calcium propionate (preservative), caramel color, whey, soy flour, calcium carbonate, soy lecithin, skim milk. "
And now, here are the ingredients on the back of package whole-wheat pita bread, I ate today:
Stone ground whole wheat flour, water, yeast, salt, Calcium propionate
Catch any differences? Sure you did. Some of the ingredients that are in the first two are high fructose corn syrup, partially Hydrogenated soybean oil. Both are undesirable. Bread also lists unbleached enriched wheat flour, which is almost like saying "Borderline fake whole wheat bread."
These are things that you do not want to see anywhere near the list component of whole wheat bread, you're buying. This, of course, will eliminate about 90% whole-wheat bread in the market for you, because 90% of them have one or more of these ingredients. And as you can see from the first two bread, the fact that it says "100% whole wheat bread" or "natural" on packaging means very little.
In fact I was in my grocery store yesterday, and knowing I was going to blog about this today, I took a minute into bread aisle to check the ingredients. Literally every single 100% whole wheat bread in store contains high fructose corn syrup.
So now you know all about "bad" whole wheat bread, you might be wondering what brands accounted for 10% of good bread. Interestingly enough I don't have any brand names in the list for you off the top of my head. I have a brand-it is just some small local brands that you won't find anywhere else, with the exception of a few small stores in my area.
At present, although it is possible that you will be able to find their own brand of "good" small local whole wheat bread, near you, there's one place where you are almost guaranteed to find one ... health food shop.
Most (if not all) of the bread, you will find in your grocery store will contain one or more "bad" ingredients mentioned earlier. Bread in the shop are made specifically for health products antithesis of these useless bread.
You still want to check the ingredients whole wheat bread, before you buy it, but your chances of finding a "good" health food store bread is much higher than that found in the grocery store.
And just so you know your bread ingredients should equally fit my bread ingredients in order to be "good". For example some organic whole wheat bread will have a huge list of things that they do not have, and it will still be fine.
Mainly checks to certain things, not in it. In particular, high fructose corn syrup, partially Hydrogenated soybean oil and mention the word "Grey" or "Enriched." If you see something in there that looks a bit funny, you can go home and look that up before you buy an ingredient or eat it. Or leave a comment here with the ingredients, and I'll take a look at it.
In conclusion, (it took me 5 minutes to come up with words to begin with this proposal, by the way) whenever you see the 100% whole wheat bread for a list of healthy foods, just keep in mind that this is an additional explanation that is designed to go with him.
